About Us

Dear Members,

Welcome to All Asia Affairs (AAA) a research and advisory house based in Tokyo with a network of contributors across Asia. Like many of us in the online space, here you will find opinions, recommendations, commentaries, and reportage on Asian affairs. But unlike many others, our unique value proposition is to publish content that reflects,

Actionable insights

Our aim is to be the trusted voice for decision makers navigating modern Asia. We are committed to expressing not just the factual recording of events nor simply their interpretation, but delivering actionable insights for decision makers. This requires giving viewpoints that are original, accessible, and informed at the expense of occasionally appearing contentious to some of our readers. Our aim is not to be provocative for its own sake, but to be strong advocates of our analysis until such time we are proven wrong. And we have no illusions there will be many times we will be proven wrong. Nevertheless our belief is that Members will gain far more from clear and reasoned judgment over middle-of-the-road views that are increasingly commonplace among commentators fearful of making a wrong call. On the flip side, we do not shy away from acknowledging when predictions do not turn out as we expect. Our goal is not to avoid wrong projections but poor ones.

Primarily about geopolitical, strategic, and social trends

This means that while we recognize the importance of big headline grabbing events, we believe that there are plentiful sources of information on such matters. Here Members like yourself will benefit from assessments about the trends affecting your lives in the medium-to-long term which will enable you to respond in a more grounded fashion. While it is our eventual aim to expand coverage into other aspects of Asia, especially in the arts, society, and culture, our current articles will not feature these topics as a matter of course though we may from time to time publish articles on such issues where they have a relevance on geopolitical, strategic, or social trends. Notwithstanding our areas of interest, we of course continue to welcome collaborations with anyone with deep interest and expertise in any sphere of life in Asia.

Diverse viewpoints

We host perspectives from a broad range of personalities from practitioners, policy makers, scholars, investors, analysts, students, and teachers. We do not discriminate on the basis of age or experience because we believe that great insights can come from all corners. We encourage crowdsourced analyses where Members contribute to the arguments made in our articles which will help us improve and refine our conclusions. We ask that Members respect the views of contributors as we extend the same courtesy to feedback and comments made by Members on our site. Common sense dictates that abusive, derogatory, and irrelevant remarks will be removed and persons making those remarks may be subject to bans. At AAA, arguments are what drives conversations, not personalities.

While publications will be on an ad hoc basis as we grow our expert pool, we also invite Members to work with us if they have unique ideas on covering Asian affairs. One important short-to-medium term priority is the translation of select AAA articles to our key regional languages (Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesia, and Hindi). If you believe you are up for the job, we would be happy to hear from you.

We invite you to read our Usage policy and our Pitching practice for more information about how we run the site.

Our current team is led by publisher Hideki Sugaya. All correspondences should be mailed to the editor. We strive to reply to emails within 3 working days.
